Moisturising is an essential part of a skincare routine. If you think about it, skin goes through a lot on a daily basis. It is exposed to the sun, heating and air-conditioning, has make-up put on it and can quickly dry out; the list could go on.
An effective moisturiser helps to rehydrate our skin and supports its natural ability to be stretchy, soft and act as a protective barrier. The skin on our face is far more delicate than the rest of our body, so we need to take a bit more care when choosing the product that we put on it.
Moisturisers work with the natural capacity of our skin and are absorbed into it, so the ingredients in our creams and lotions are worth considering carefully. It is the same principle as watching what we eat. We know that the better the food we consume, generally the better we will feel. For this reason, many of us try and eat organically.
If we follow the same principles for what we put on our body as what we put into it, an organic product range for our skincare is a smart move. But selecting the best product can be a challenge.

What is an organic moisturiser?
The ingredients in an organic moisturiser should, by definition, be derived from living matter or produced without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides or other artificial chemicals. This means that no chemicals, or toxins, will be put on your skin and being absorbed by your body. Sounds good right!?
Products often have different phrases attached to them about their organic credentials, but they can have different meanings:
Organically certified – It is a good idea to check whether a product is “organically certified”. This means that the company making it has had a full inspection and been validated by an official body. Usually, these companies will display the certifier’s logo.
Containing organic ingredients – Other products will use the term organic when they are using ingredients that have been certified as organic. This is great, but it is worth knowing that this doesn’t necessarily mean the producer itself has had the certification.
Why choose organic products?
There are some common ingredients used in non-organic skincare products that are not necessarily as good for us as the product may suggest.
Parabens – Parabens are preservatives put into products to make them last longer. However, they can often irritate the skin and may increase the risk of some cancers.
Mineral oil – sounds innocuous enough? Mineral oil is not actually a natural product but rather a petrochemical which means it is obtained from petroleum and natural gas. It is thought that this ingredient can contribute to clogging pores rather than cleaning them as well as posing more pressing concerns for our overall health.
But there is good news! The natural world provides us with more than enough replacements for the job these products are meant to do for us, without the added health warning.
Organic ingredients to look for
Lists of ingredients can sometimes be rather lengthy, but here are some of the best to look out for in your organic moisturiser:
Rich organic oils – Rich organic oils can provide the moisture boost we need, and they are particularly useful ingredients to look for if you have dry skin. You could look out for coconut oil, avocado oil, even olive oil.
Light organic oils – Lighter oils, such as grapeseed oil provide a lighter level of moisture. These are great for a cream you use every day or if you have oily skin.
Natural clay – If you have a more oily base to your skin to start with, clay (yes, clay!) can also be an excellent ingredient to look for as it absorbs the excess oil from your skin without drying it out.
Common organic ingredients – More familiar ingredients such as shea butter and aloe are also good as well as slightly more unusual things for a moisturiser such as beeswax, chia oil or carrot-seed oil. You will even come across frankincense, which is there to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Ingredients for fragrance – There are also a wealth of natural products that can make these moisturisers smell wonderful too as well as being suitable to put on our skin. Look out for fragrances described as Botanics, which means the smell has been derived from a plant or plants. You can also find the fabulous scents of essential oils such as lavender and rose. Many moisturisers will have a combination.
The important thing about these ingredients is they are all-natural and interact in a natural way with our skin.
Which product should I choose?
There are a lot of products out there so it can be hard to choose. Here are a few pointers to get you started:
- Check the ingredients – It is a good idea to check that the ingredients match any claim of being natural and/or organic. Check out any parts that you are not sure of. Is the product or its ingredients carrying a certification that they are organic?
- Read customer reviews – It is also a good idea to read the reviews on the products you like the look of. How have other people got on with them when actually using the product? Does it do what it says it does? Would they recommend it?
- Check the claims – Look for products that have organic certification or can verify claims about their ingredients.
- Consider your needs – Think about what you know about your skin; is it oily/dry/combination? Do you want a heavy-duty treatment or a lighter cream?
If you are still trying to decide, here are a few I like:
1. Rose Otto Regenerating Concentrate from Alteya Organics
This incredible serum from Alteya Organics contains a blend of rose oil, mullein flower, white truffle extract, candela flower and a complex of bioactive marine compounds.
It can be applied to your face and neck and is designed to hydrate and regenerate your skin, visibly reducing the signs of ageing. It’s completely organic and has been certified by NATRUE, The International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association.
Find out what Emily thought when she tried it: Alteya Organics Regenerating Concentrate Rose Otto Review.
The serum has received several awards, including:
- Winner of the Judges Choice Award at the Europe Natural & Organic Awards 2018
- This is what’s next finalist at the Nexty Awards 2018
- Winner at the Janey Loves 2018 Platinum Awards
- Finalist of the Pure Beauty Global Awards 2018
Its success is down to its effective formula and the rose oil produced in Bulgaria by the Alteya family. The Damask Rose petals are hand-harvested first thing in the morning for only a few weeks a year. This means that they contain the optimum amount of oil and beneficial plant substances.

Pros
- Certified organic by NATRUE
- Multiple award winner
- Made with genuine Bulgarian Damask Rose oil harvested in the Valley of the Roses.
Cons
- This is a great value product, but the quality of the ingredients has driven the price up so it may be beyond some budgets.
2. Neal’s Yard Frankincense Hydrating Cream
This hydrating cream from the trusted Neal’s Yard brand has several of the lighter oils – jojoba, sunflower and borage – making it a good cream for daily use. It also contains frankincense adding a bit of luxury and lift for tired skin.
It is one of those that contains organic ingredients but is not fully certified as organic. However, coming from a brand with a good reputation and an organically certified parent company, I feel it is still a good buy.
Check the price on Amazon.
Pros
- Made by a reputable company and a well-known brand
- Pot is recyclable or reusable
- Made in the UK
Cons
- Some reviewers have said it is too rich for them as a day cream, so have switched to using it at night
3. Satin Naturel Bio Hyaluronic Acid Cream
A new kid on the block, this skincare brand from Germany has won an award for its products this year. It is a good option for those who prefer vegan products and also contains hyaluronic acid, which already exists naturally in our skin, but levels reduce as we age. This is a good option if you would generally choose a product with anti-ageing properties.

Pros
- A good option for those wanting an anti-ageing product
- Can be bought in a 50ml or 100ml pot
- There are a range of similar products that you could add into your routine as well
Cons
- Does have an emphasis on the anti-ageing properties
- Concerned about how far your products have to travel to get to you? This is the only one of my recommendations that comes from abroad
4. EcoDrop Organic Face Cream
As well as loving the packaging for this product (also biodegradable!), I like the fact that it is based on a small number of well-chosen ingredients. Described as 100% organic, this cream is paraben-free and 100% vegan. They also do a version of this product if you have eczema-prone skin which is great.
Visit Amazon to view the price.
Pros
- Fully recyclable and plastic-free packaging
- Simple ingredients, so a good one to try if you have more sensitive skin
Cons
- Because of the simplicity of ingredients, it might not have the highly perfumed scent that many of us have come to expect with skincare products
Conclusion
An organic moisturiser has the benefit of rehydrating our skin without the added risks that non-organic ingredients can carry. Choosing a product that has ingredients such as organic oils, natural clay, or shea butter provide the base of a great product. Choosing botanics or essential oils can tailor the fragrance, and additions like frankincense or hyaluronic acid are included to target specific needs such as fine lines or wrinkles.
