G & G Vitamins’ Collagen Extra Review

7.8
Collagen Extra

G & G Vitamins offer a vast selection of supplements, including several designed to boost your collagen levels. I’ve been taking their Collagen Extra capsules for the last month. In each capsule, you get a blend of collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamin C and MSM. Each ingredient has been carefully selected to support bones, joints, and healthy skin.

In a serving of two capsules, you get 400mg of hydrolysed marine collagen. This is a great source of type I collagen, which is the most abundant type and forms strong fibres used in your bones, tendons, skin, and blood vessels.

Because it’s been hydrolysed the long protein chains have been split into short segments of two or three amino acids. This makes it easier for your body to use them to create its own new collagen.

The accompanying vitamins and minerals all play a role in collagen production and the structures it’s found in. Chondroitin and glucosamine are both crucial to the structure of the cartilage found in your joints.

Unfortunately, because the collagen and chondroitin come from fish, this supplement isn’t suitable for vegans or vegetarians. As with all of G &G’s supplements they contain no artificial preservatives, binders, colourings or fillers. In one bottle, you get 60 capsules which is a one or two month’s supply according to the directions; ‘take 1 to 2 capsules daily’. I chose to take two together first thing in the morning.

Who are G & G Vitamins?

Founded in 1965, G & G vitamins are one of the UK’s original supplement manufacturers. They aim to produce the purest, high-quality products while keeping them affordable for those who need them. Everything they create starts by being formulated by a nutritional therapist. Research and testing are then conducted to find the very best ingredients and how they provide the optimum effect.

Each of the products made at G & G has been designed to genuinely help their customers and not follow fad diets or health trends. The active ingredients they use have been carefully researched and then prepared to create the most useful results.

Awards and Certifications

G & G hold several relevant certificates and awards to demonstrate the quality of their full product range. They include a certification that they are following the rigorous standards of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) awarded by the Health Food Manufacturers Association.

All their products come under their organic certification from the Soil Association. Throughout the production process, AIB International conduct monitoring of quality and safety with regular analysis.

I would have awarded a higher score if: There was details of analysis available verifying the contents and safety information.

Ease of Use

Capsules are a simple and straightforward way to take a supplement. These are quite large, so you’ll definitely need a mouthful of water or two to get them down. The plastic bottle is lightweight and relatively small, making it ideal for carrying in a pocket or bag.

Because I have young children, I always prefer to see supplement bottles with secure, child-safe caps, but this one just has a standard screw lid. The information on the label, including the directions for use, is relatively basic but includes everything you need to know.

I would have awarded a higher score if: the bottle had a child-safe cap.

Taste

The capsules have a reasonably strong flavour that’s slightly metallic but not unpleasant. Because you only hold them in your mouth briefly before swallowing it didn’t bother me too much.

I would have awarded a higher score if: the capsules were tasteless.

How effective are they?

During the 30 days I took these capsules, I didn’t notice any obvious effects. Because my joints are in good health and I don’t suffer from pain, my main reason for taking them was to see if it would improve my skin health and reduce some of the fine wrinkles on my face.

I spent a lot of time staring in the mirror to see if I noticed any difference. Although my skin definitely looks better, it’s hard to tell if it’s down to the capsules. As a result, I’ve decided to keep taking them for another month and have combined them with a topical retinol cream to see if I can get the improvements to continue.

My experience with Collagen Extra taught me that it’s best used as part of a routine of several products or to support specific conditions or pain.

I would have awarded a higher score if: I had experienced a more potent effect.

Value for Money

Considering all the collagen, vitamins, and minerals you get in these capsules, they’re an absolute bargain at £13 per bottle. Collagen is not a cheap supplement, and the more popular it becomes, the more prices seem to increase.

A product like this from an experienced, reputable company, with high-quality marine sourced collagen, is one of the best prices I’ve seen. If you’ve not tried collagen before or you need something to help with a specific joint problem, this is an excellent product to start with.
